Orbio — 8K VR Video Player for iPhone
Orbio plays 8K VR video on iPhone as it is. 8192×4096 HEVC, with no conversion and no downscaling.
Free to download. Watch three minutes of any video before buying. One purchase, no subscription.
Built to play 8K VR video.
2:1 8K HEVC such as 8192×4096 plays as it is, with no conversion and no downscaling. It makes no difference whether the file is on the phone, on a NAS or in the cloud, and seeking works the same way.
Switch to VR mode and the folder list itself splits into a left and right eye view. Going into a folder, going back, choosing a video, playing, seeking and closing can all be done from the remote. Double tap the screen to go back.
Assign any action to the buttons of an off-the-shelf Bluetooth remote or game controller. Orbio learns whichever button you press, so it is not tied to a particular model. A single press, a double press and a long press can each do something different, which is enough to run the whole app from a remote with only three buttons.
Connects over SMB, SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2 and reads only the byte ranges being watched. No copy to the phone, no transcoding server, and it works with no free space on the device. SMB servers on your network are found automatically.
HEVC tagged hev1 turns black in most players. Orbio plays it by swapping the tag on the fly, with no conversion, so there is no quality loss and no waiting. When a file really cannot play, the screen tells you why and what to do.
Set the format every video opens in (the default is VR180 side-by-side). Or turn on automatic detection, which checks spherical metadata, file-name conventions, the first frame and your past manual choices, in that order. Either way, you can correct it during playback.
Headset mode splits the screen for both eyes, offsets it by your interpupillary distance and corrects for lens distortion. Handheld mode shows one view you can look around with a drag or by moving the phone.
Playback position is remembered even for files on a server. When the phone gets hot, Orbio lowers the render resolution on its own so playback keeps going.
Switches to match the footage.
From a NAS on your shelf to a bucket in the cloud, with the same controls.
No ads and no tracking. Remote connections go directly between your phone and your server, never through a server run by the developer. File names, servers and viewing history never leave the device. The only things sent out are anonymous statistics about which features are used, which you can switch off in Settings, and feedback you write yourself (details, in Japanese).
No server needed: a bundled test pattern lets you check VR playback right away.
Resolution and frame rate depend on the device. For 8K, 30fps is the guideline.
